The BETTER BIKEWAYS signage system was designed with the goals of easy legibility and comprehension in mind.
The system focuses on four categories of information, each of which is denoted by a specific sign format. These categories are:
• POINTS OF INTEREST
These signs can be used by themselves or jointly to provide a comprehensive information and safety system for a bikeway.
The examples below show prototypes for proposed signage in each of the above categories.
The Navigation sign is the prime identifier of the bikeway and as such accompanies all other signage. Navigation signs comes in two basic variants.
THE BASIC NAVIGATION SIGN features the name of the route along with the bikeway icon. It is used to alert motorists, cyclist and pedestrians to the location of a bikeway.
Dimensions: 26" x 8"
THE DETAILED NAVIGATION SIGN is targeted specifically at cyclists and includes a variety of navigational information such as:
• Route destination & direction
• Simplified bikeway map
• Distances to major cross streets
Caution signs convey warning messages to both motorists and cyclists. They can be used to alert drivers to a bike crossing area, draw their attention to the presence of cyclists on the road or, warn bicyclists about a busy intersection at which cross traffic does not stop. Because their message needs to be understood quickly and from a distance they are the largest and most basic of the route’s signs.
Dimensions: 30" x 30"
Connection signs highlight intersections with other bicycle routes or public transportation hubs. When a bikeway ends, connection signs can also be used to point cyclists to other nearby routes. The goal of the Connection sign is to integrate individual bikeways into a broader transportation network that also includes public transportation options.
Dimensions: 16" x 22"
POINTS OF INTEREST
Point of Interest signs highlight points on or near the route of relevance to cyclists. These can include, but are not limited to, bike shops, libraries, post offices, restaurants, museums or tourist information offices. By drawing attention to these locations, Point of Interest signs can help make bikeways more attractive recreational routes for cyclists.
Dimensions: 18" x 18"
